The Lowdown:

We’re in the midst of a space kick. Bug’s birthday party was space-themed, he’s dubbed the room he and Peanut share “The Space Station,” he wanders through the house in astronaut garb, you get the idea. I first noticed this specific book from letstalkpicturebooks.com and instantly knew I needed to get it for Bug. The illustrations are beyond phenomenal and the limited, rhyming text allows younger readers to get a taste for the deliciousness this book offers without being overwhelmed with space info, which can be just as vast and overwhelming as the subject itself.

The text of Tiny Little Rocket reads much like a poem that has been split between the pages. The strategic breaks add drama and the story becomes somewhat lyrical. I caught Bug reading it to himself put to a tune, which worked wonderfully and was a joy to witness. The protagonist of the story isn’t ever identified as male or female (which I love) but is obviously a child as they meander through the solar system with little rhyme or reason. They also have a tendency to randomly push or pull any levers or buttons which sends the reader spinning into new adventures.

Since Richard Colligridge provides some very clever additions to the book that allow for special interaction with the reader. This includes a few pages with buttons and levers that the reader can “push”or “pull.” Collingridge has very strategically drawn many of the pictures from a first person perspective, thereby allowing the young space-enthusiast to feel like they really are in the driver’s seat. The real treat though is the stunning art work with such vibrant colors. The array of planets, stars, meteors, etc. just seem to leap off the page and beg to be admired.

Story Tips:

  1. Look out for the surprise ending and fact sheet at the end of the book.

I need more!

I need to actually get a hold of these books but Richard Collingridge also has authored/illustrated When It Snows and Lionheart. They have his remarkable signature style of vibrant colors and pictures that you want to just step into (from what I’ve seen. Yes, I was internet stalking…).
