Title: Love the Fur You’re In

Author/Illustrator: Random House Compilation

Synopsis: A nostalgic powerhouse that provides feel-good advice.

The Lowdown:

If you needed directions to a certain street, I’d be able to help you out. My childhood did not include a lot of television but I did get to enjoy Sesame Street in the mornings followed by a lovely session with Mr. Rogers. Like many people I’m filled with a nostalgic glow when I see Snuffy or Bert & Ernie.

That’s exactly what Love the Fur You’re In taps into. It not a story book per say, but instead a compilation of key moments from Sesame Street books spanning the last fifty years. The book balances between funny and wise offering up positive tidbits with a Sesame Street twist like: “Don’t hide your light under a trash can lid,” “Be someone’s Super Grover,” or “Don’t count your cookies until they’re baked.” It’s the kind of book you could easily give for graduation.

Alternatively, we’ve started pulling it down and discussing the meaning behind each page. Bug flips through the pages and then after choosing one, we discuss what the page is trying to tell us. We don’t watch TV, so he’s not familiar with the characters but he enjoys the enthusiasm that my nostalgic forays can deliver as I explain who Big Bird and Oscar are. The illustrations in turn prove to be timeless, as their age proves irrelevant. We enjoy each decade and style in its own right.

Story Tips:

  1. This is a dip-your-toes book. A great story to leave out and flip through a couple pages or use to springboard a conversation.

I need more!

The back of the book includes a lovely glossary which can direct you to other Sesame Street books.

  1. Sesame Street raised me. I loved the archived illustrations that ranged from the 70’s up until now. And the positive mantras touched all the feels. If you too were raised by Sesame Street, give this book a gander.
