Author/Illustrator: Mary Murphy
Age Group: 0-4
Synopsis: Get ready for bed with some sweet little creatures.
The Low Down:
A bedtime story is such a classic idea and there are so many to choose from. We let Bug choose his own bedtime story but sometimes end up with something that riles him up rather than settling him down. Good Night Like This is a perfect bedtime story in that it provides an interesting, soothing, and beautiful read at a time when not only kids are absolutely exhausted from the entire day.
Murphy uses a magical combination of colors, that mirror the sunset with their purples, oranges, and pinks. It is both soothing and striking as the illustrations are framed by silhouettes of vegetation and the occasional bug, bird, or other small friend. On each page, one of these creatures is waiting to bid the animals goodnight. An additional feature is that each page essentially becomes two, with a flap that depicts a scene showing the parents saying good night to their little ones and a following scene where they are snuggled up and sleeping. Bug loved turning the flap and whispering, “Good night.” to each animal in turn.
The story doesn’t contain a thrilling plot or much a plot at all and that is why it’s such a lovely bedtime story. The calming repetition is soothing for little ones while the flaps keep them entertained. The parents of all the animals are perfectly charming as they rock and snuggle their little ones to sleep. By the time we finish reading it, Bug has calmed down and is usually snuggling with me. Definitely something my energetic two-year-old doesn’t care to do very often.
Story Tips:
- Read this one with a blanket. It’s so much more cosy.
I need more!
Mary Murphy has a new book coming out in 2017 which is a mix-and-match farm animal book. Animals can be Pigs, Chickens, or even Pickens. It looks too cute and we’ll be keeping an eye out for it. For other cute titles check out: http://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/author/2806/Mary-Murphy.html
