Title: Rabbits Don’t Lay Eggs

Author: Paula Metcalf

Illustrator: Cally Johnson-Isaacs

Age Group: 0-4

Synopsis: A rabbit, named Rupert, dreams of living on the farm with the happy animals but he’ll need to find a way to make himself useful in order to convince them to let him stay.

The Low Down:

This is a book I only pull out around Easter time. While I know new things can be very entertaining I was a little surprised that Bug loved it so much. Reading it the seventh time in the last three days is what tipped me off. The story is cute and funny and the illustrations earn identical adjectives. The reader can’t help but applaud Rupert, the rabbit, who displays such tenacity and constantly maintains a cheerful disposition.

When Rupert initially visits the farm he tries a few different jobs but realizes that seeds are too tasty to protect from birds, only roosters can crow, and he can’t lay an egg like the duck. As the other animals try and cheer him up with a tasty snack Rupert discovers he can burrow under the fence and deliver tastier morsels than just hay to the farm creatures, there by cementing his position among them. There’s a silliness that makes an appearances every so often and results in round after round of giggles.

The cover just seems to call to little ones with its textured and glittery surface. The inside illustrations create the same kind of lure but with their brightly colored and simple pictures. The entire book is so friendly and welcoming (expect for a few cross words and looks by the duck) that little readers will love every page.

Story Tips:

  1. When Rupert is trying to crow like a rooster make up your own silly crows. Guaranteed giggles.
  2. This is a great Easter basket addition.

I need more!

Paula Metcalf has quite few books out. Her A Guide to Sisters looks absolutely adorable. Check out more info via Google or Amazon.

Cally Johnson-Isaacs has a recently released With My Mommy out now! Her other books can be viewed here: http://callyjanestudio.blogspot.com but I think her Facebook page is easier to use and more up-to-date. Check that out here: https://www.facebook.com/callyjohnsonisaacsillustration/
